Come to Belize to experience paradise and the world's best flats fishing. Turneffe Atoll, the largest of four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere, is best-known for its diverse flats fishing & many other vibrant activites. This luxurious Belize resort is located on a isolated point, adorned with a white sand beach and coconut palms. Turquoues waters extend in all directions outside your front door and the bone fishing flats & vibrant coral reef are only a stone's throw away.
For more than three decades, Belize has been known as one of the world's premier flats fishing destinations combining a remarkable fishery with unsurpased natural beauty. Whether you are fishing, diving or just relaxing in paradise, we offer top-notch equipment, superior accommodations and service. The unique flats that surround this location offer the ability to sight-fish for BONEFISH, PERMIT and TARPON on any given day making it one of the few places in the world in which a Grand Slam is a possibility.
We do our best to accomodate the fishing scedule to each unique group. On average a standard day's fishing is about 8 hours. Normally the day of flats fishing kicks off after breakfast and ends around five, although schedule depends on group requests, tides and other factors. Savory Lunches will be packed for the day and you will enjoy a mid day meal out on the water. Each evening our hosts will discuss plans for the following day. Flats fishing is most easily scheduled in advance but early morning fishing, particularly for tarpon, can be exceptional, and arrangements to go tarpon fishing before breakfast are easily made.
We believe strongly in protecting the fishery at Turneffe. With rare exception, all fish at Turneffe Flats are released. In 2009, Turneffe Atoll Trust, a non-profit organization associated with Turneffe Flats, led efforts to protect bonefish, permit and tarpon as "Catch & Release" species throughout Belize.
Both on the ocean side flats and in the mangrove-lined lagoons The Turneffe Atoll is teeming with schools of bonefish. Bonefish are present on the ocean side flats all months of the year. Throughout the daytime ours it is not uncommon to spot hundreds of bonefish, with expansive schools of 50 or more fish drifting along the flats like ghostly shadows. Most fish average three to four pounds but 6-8 pound fishing are not uncommon and 10 pound plus fish are considered trophies. In the lagoons the bonefishing is normally done by skiff. The fishing that concentrate in the lagoons shimmer with an exquisite brown and green coloration, which helps them to blend in the lagoon floor. Accuracy is key! As you cruise along spotting schools of bonefish your ability to hit your spot will improve as the day progresses. we recommend a 7 or 8 weight rod with a reel capable of holding at least 150 yards of backing. Floating lines are imperative, particularly when wading, and our flies tend to be smaller than those used.
Permit: Many anglers come to Belize to pursue permit. Permit are plentiful at this luxury resort and are found on the bars and flats throughout Turneffe Atoll. You can expect plenty of opportunities at 10-20 pound permit with some fish in the 30-40 pound class. Belize permit may be more plentiful than in other areas, but they are just as challenging to catch!
The tarpon migration is generally from late April through September although there are some resident tarpon around throughout the year. Most tarpon jumped are 60-90 pounds with some huge fish of 150 pounds or more. Most of our tarpon fishing is to rolling fish from the bow of our skiffs.
The ocean side flats abound with other species as do the lagoons, creeks and channels. Barracuda, jacks, sharks, snapper, mutton, jack crevalle and cubera snapper are all available and add to the angling experience. We recommend that you come prepared to at least try for some of these other species during your stay.
