At Gage Outdoor Expeditions we are often asked about the differences between hunting red stag, also known as red deer, in Argentina versus New Zealand. Although both countries have healthy populations, the hunting can differ immensely in style and trophy size.
In 1851 red stag were introduced to the south island of New Zealand and over the next century, spread to the north island and became abundant. More recently, hunting the red stag has become very popular and large estates have emerged throughout New Zealand. Many of these estates are as large as 20,000 acres and are fenced in to control the genetics and breeding of the deer herd. Due to the controlled breeding present in most of New Zealand estates, very large stag are present and most would agree that hunters have the best chance of harvesting a gold class stag at one of these locations. New Zealand does offer some free range hunts but the size of the stag are much smaller, comparable to Argentina, with these outfitters.

Whenever Ben was unsure of any of my inquiries, he contacted someone that could answer and Ben swiftly returned my phone call or email. More...
